Wiki strategies

26 Sep

First, I want to say that I have little personal experience on Wikis. Before I took this course Enterprise2.0, I confused the Wikis with Wikipedia and treated them as the same thing. After a period learning of Web2.0, I’ve got an overview of Wikis. Personally thinking, Wiki is more formal and academic compared with blog. That’s why so many big companies like IBM prefer to use internal Wiki to gather organizational knowledge and improve business decisions. How to ensure the employees to use Wikis effectively? First of all, let’s see a short video to get a view of an internal wiki — Zoho Wiki:

In business areas, companies generally use wikis internally to develop group or organizational projects. Here are simple strategies to provide some personal suggestions on using business wikis:                               1)       Wiki isn’t just a website for add or edit information; it is a total new platform for enabling teamwork and collaboration. As a leader, it is crucial to explain advantages and usages to engage people and make sure the permissions setting for all the members.                                                                                                 2)       Before set team or add contents, a comprehensive policy should be established to guide the usage of Wikis. This policy can outline the structure of publishing contents, set targets for your wiki use, regular the scope and relevant rules.                                                                                                                       3)       Make your team members free and comfortable to share information and knowledge.                             4)       Systematic and clear categorized tags or pages are very important to facilitate the capture of accurate information.                                                                                                                                         5)       In order to engage your team into using the new wiki, some competition or rewarding is appropriate to give your team an motivation                                                                                                                 6)       Choose a right wiki. As we know, wiki provide a large number of different options and features. It is not necessary to add all functions on your wiki page which may make it confused or in complete chaos     Certainly, Wiki cannot be used in business. If you like, you can use Wiki to build your own online community to gather the people with similar interests or something else all over the world.

Here is another interesting video to introduce another kind of Wiki – Wetpaint Wiki, hope you like it:

I think the strategy you offer in the form of “In order to engage your team into using the new wiki, some competition or rewarding is appropriate to give your team an motivation” is a crucial element to a wiki within the enterprise. In the end no employee will adopt new software or go the extra mile for the business unless they are given a reason to do so.

Hi, sorry for late reply. For your question, my meaning is that some Wiki managers like to use imperative tone to communicate with their members or assign missions to their members which cannot build an open and share atmosphere, thus limit the knowledge sharing. So in my view, be more friendly can make team members feel more comfortable and then glad to share.

I will have to agree with u that wiki are useful for group projects and your strategies are excellent and another strategy that can be applied is limit the amount of links.
